Ellis Island. From 1892 to 1924, more than 12 million immigrants arrived in the United States via Ellis Island, a small island in New York Harbor. Located just off the New Jersey coast and close to the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island became part of the Statue of Liberty National Monument in 1965. Officially closed in 1954, Ellis Island was opened on a limited basis for nine years beginning in 1976. In 1984, Ellis Island underwent an extreme makeover, which cost $160 million. The Main Building was reopened six years later as the Ellis Island Immigration Museum, which hosts nearly two million visitors each year. For more information, visit www.ellisisland.org/default.asp. Ellis Island Wall of Honor. Outside the Main Building at Ellis Island is the Wall of Honor. While some people believe that it has the name of all of the immigrants who passed through Ellis Island, in truth the wall is there to offer anyone the opportunity to donate money to honor any immigrant who comes to America. The wall currently lists approximately 700,000 names, which represent 400 years of immigration. For more information, visit www.ellisisland.org/default.asp. [Top]
